Derecho

A derecho is a powerful storm complex made of thunderstorms, causing extensive wind damage over large areas. It moves quickly, often faster than 50 mph, and can produce winds over 125 mph, impacting both communities and agriculture. Derechos are most common in the central and Midwestern US from late spring through summer. Despite their destructive nature, they play a role in the water cycle and atmospheric balance.
