The meeting follows a canceled visit by Peña to Washington amid heightened tensions between the two countries. Relations have been strained since Trump's campaign, during which he threatened to renegotiate NAFTA and build a border wall funded by Mexico. Despite these threats, NAFTA renegotiations have been delayed, and the wall has not been constructed. Analysts suggest that US-Mexico relations are at their lowest point since the 1848 US intervention, which resulted in Mexico losing nearly half its territory.
