Despite having more soldiers, the Iraqi army retreated, leaving behind military resources. The U.S. formed a coalition to support Iraq, and Shiite militias mobilized against ISIS. By mid-2014, Iraq regained most territories, but ISIS still held parts of Mosul and Kirkuk. The conflict caused numerous deaths and mass displacement.
