In June 2014, ISIS took control of Mosul, leading to severe consequences for the region. The province of Nineveh, particularly Mosul, faced significant tragedies, including crimes against civilians. Despite having more soldiers, the Iraqi army retreated, leaving behind military resources. The U.S. formed a coalition to support Iraq, and Shiite militias mobilized against ISIS. By mid-2014, Iraq regained most territories, but ISIS still held parts of Mosul and Kirkuk. The conflict caused numerous deaths and mass displacement.
