Northern Ireland Set To Legalize Same-Sex Marriage And Abortion

The UK Parliament has approved a bill to legalize same-sex marriage and extend abortion rights in Northern Ireland, the only UK region with restrictive laws on these issues. The bill was set to take effect if Northern Ireland failed to restore its government by a specific deadline. Despite attempts by some Assembly members to halt the changes, the session ended without electing a new speaker. Under the new rules, existing investigations and prosecutions related to abortion will be dropped, and a public consultation on the legal framework for abortion will begin. Same-sex couples can legally marry starting Valentine's Day.
