How do sounds travel?

Sound travels from a source to our ears through compression waves. These waves are created by vibrating vocal cords and need a medium like gas, liquid, or solid to travel. The speed of sound varies depending on the medium, being fastest in solids and slowest in gases. Regardless of speed, sound is always transmitted as compression waves.
