Did You Know? Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, into a family of Baptist preachers. He excelled in public speaking and was elected student body president at Crozer Theological Seminary. King earned a doctorate in theology from Boston University. In 1955, he became president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, leading a boycott against segregated transit. His leadership in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference elevated his national and international presence. King's speeches and writings, including the 'I Have a Dream' speech, highlighted racial issues in the U.S. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize but faced opposition from authorities. King was assassinated in 1968, and his legacy is honored with a federal holiday on the third Monday of January.
