The Libyan army was deployed in Tripoli to curb clashes between armed groups and militias from the capital and Misrata. Since Friday, Tripoli has been nearly paralyzed. Armed groups defy authority, creating chaos in a country lacking professional police and military. After Gaddafi's fall in 2011, the Libyan government relied on militias, including Islamist groups, for security, but integrating these fighters into regular forces failed. The defense minister ordered the army's exceptional deployment, which is still in formation. Over 40 deaths have occurred since the clashes began.
