The Atacama Desert, known as the driest in the world, is experiencing a rare blooming event due to recent heavy rains in northern Chile. This phenomenon, known as the 'desert in bloom,' is becoming more frequent due to climate change. Over 200 species, mostly endemic, lie dormant beneath the dry soil, waiting for rain to flourish. The blooming stretches from north of La Serena to the Peruvian and Bolivian borders, with the peak season occurring from mid-August to late September, coinciding with the onset of spring.
