Astronauts on the International Space Station face water scarcity, necessitating the recycling of waste water, including urine, into drinking water. This is achieved through a filtration process that removes large particles and microscopic bacteria, followed by heating to kill any remaining microorganisms. The result is purified water that is even cleaner than what is typically consumed on Earth.
