Structurally, antibodies are Y-shaped proteins with specific binding sites that match antigens, similar to a lock and key. This specificity allows them to neutralize antigens or tag them for attack by other immune components. The immune system's diversity of antibodies enables it to recognize a wide range of antigens. There are five immunoglobulin isotopes in mammals, each directing specific immune responses. Antibodies can also be cloned in labs for research and medical use.
