In 2015, press freedom in the Americas was worse than in Africa, with Europe leading globally. Africa ranked second for the first time, while the Americas fell to third due to threats and violence against journalists. The Middle East and North Africa were the worst regions for press freedom. Reporters Without Borders noted a global decline in press freedom indicators, with political leaders often using paranoia to control media. In Latin America, institutional violence, organized crime, impunity, corruption, and media concentration were major obstacles to press freedom.
