Between 2002 and 2008, at least 6,400 civilians were executed by the Colombian military and falsely presented as combat casualties, a practice known as 'false positives.' This figure is three times higher than previously estimated. Soldiers inflated guerrilla casualties with civilian deaths due to pressure from superiors, although military leaders deny systematic practices. The scandal is the largest in the army's history during six decades of conflict. The judiciary recognized 2,249 such executions from 1988 to 2014, with most occurring between 2006 and 2008 under President Álvaro Uribe. Antioquia was the most affected region, with the Fourth Brigade responsible for 73% of civilian deaths there from 2000 to 2013.
