NASA | Petermann Ice Island 2012

The Petermann Glacier in Greenland lost a large iceberg, Peeterman Ice Island 2012, which was tracked by NASA satellites as it floated through the Nares Strait. The iceberg, half the size of Manhattan, moved at a rate of 1 kilometer per day. Scientists have monitored the glacier's crack since 2001, noting that warmer ocean temperatures contribute to iceberg formation by destabilizing the ice. After two months at sea, the iceberg began to fragment.
