129 The Gunpowder Treason - One Minute History

In 1605, English Catholic revolutionaries plotted to assassinate King James I by blowing up the House of Lords during the opening of Parliament. They smuggled gunpowder into a cellar beneath Westminster. The plot was revealed by an anonymous letter, leading to the arrest of Guy Fawkes. After being tortured, Fawkes revealed his co-conspirators, who were executed. The event is commemorated annually, with searches of the cellars beneath Parliament and the phrase 'Remember, remember the 5th of November.'
