Brazil's ethnic diversity is rooted in its history of colonization and slavery. The Portuguese colonized Brazil in 1500, establishing sugar cane plantations and initially enslaving native Indians. Due to a decline in the native population, African slaves were brought in, leading to a blend of African and Portuguese cultures. Unlike the US, Brazil received more slaves over a longer period, maintaining a strong African cultural presence. Slavery was abolished in 1888, prompting European immigration to fill workforce gaps. Today, Brazil is one of the most ethnically diverse nations.
