Indiana residents can only watch it on TV if sold out, otherwise, they must attend in person or listen to the radio. The race began in 1911, with the track known as the Brickyard. Initially, only white men participated, but diversity has improved over time. The race's speed has increased significantly, with modern winners finishing much faster than early participants. Winners receive a trophy, a substantial cash prize, and celebrate with milk.
