A study has confirmed its connection to the Guillain-Barré syndrome, a serious neurological disorder, during outbreaks in 2013 and 2014. Conducted in French Polynesia, this research is the first to establish such a link, though the exact biological mechanism remains unknown. Additionally, Zika is suspected of causing congenital brain malformations. The virus has led to over a million infections in Brazil and thousands more in neighboring countries.
