Blackbeard, likely born Edward Thatch, was a notorious pirate who began his career in the Caribbean after the War of Spanish Succession. He rose to prominence under Captain Ben Hornigold and later took command of Stede Bonnet's ship, the Revenge. Blackbeard's fearsome reputation was built on his strategic use of terror, capturing numerous ships without recorded torture or murder. He commanded the powerful Queen Anne's Revenge and wreaked havoc in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, earning the nickname El Gran Diablo. Despite his successes, morale among his crew waned due to lack of significant loot. Blackbeard's bold blockade of Charleston marked a high point in his career. Eventually, he was killed in a battle at Ocracoke Island, ending his reign of terror. His legacy as a legendary pirate endures, symbolizing the last great age of piracy.
