Human Rights Watch Latinoamérica reported that Venezuelan dissidents have been subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment while in custody of national intelligence services. The report highlights 21 cases of political dissidents facing arbitrary detentions, abuse, and torture by SEBIN. There are approximately 90 political prisoners in Venezuela, with documented abuses including attempted rape, death threats, suffocation, electric shocks, and brutal beatings. These acts aim to punish, intimidate, or force confessions. The organization deems the human rights situation in Venezuela as severe and suggests the OEA's Democratic Charter as a necessary tool to address it.
