The English Electric Lightning supersonic fighter jet, 1954 -1

The Lightning, initially known as the P1, was a groundbreaking RAF fighter that first appeared at the Farnborough Air Display. It was the first RAF fighter to break the sound barrier in level flight and later achieved Mach 2. Despite its crude appearance, it was a highly effective interceptor, equipped with powerful engines, guided missiles, and radar. The Lightning's primary role was to intercept threats quickly, a task it performed throughout its service, including intercepting Russian reconnaissance bombers. Although only 338 units were built, it was a beloved aircraft that served until 1988. Despite attempts to revive it, the Lightning remains grounded, remembered as one of the RAF's longest-serving fighters.
