Chickenpox and Shingles (Varicella-Zoster Virus)

Professor Dave explains chickenpox, a contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), part of the herpes virus family. VZV shares characteristics with herpes simplex virus (HSV), such as latent infection and recurrent disease, known as shingles. VZV spreads via the respiratory route, causing skin lesions. Symptoms include a rash and blisters, with a transmission window from before the rash until scabs form. Shingles, a reactivation of VZV, is painful and common in older adults. Treatment involves antivirals, and prevention is through vaccination.
