Over the past 60 years, Africanized honeybees, also known as killer bees, have spread through the Americas. These bees are a hybrid of European and African honeybees, created by Brazilian scientist Warrick Kerr to improve honey production in Brazil. However, they are more aggressive, especially when defending their hives. After a lab accident in 1957, these bees spread rapidly, outcompeting European honeybees. Despite their reputation, individual Africanized bees are not more dangerous than European bees, but their colonies are more defensive.
