Over the past 60 years, Africanized honeybees, also known as killer bees, have spread through the Americas. These bees are a hybrid of European and African honeybees, created by Brazilian scientist Warrick Kerr to improve honey production in Brazil. However, they are more aggressive, especially when defending their hives. After a lab accident in 1957, these bees spread rapidly, outcompeting European honeybees. Despite their reputation, individual Africanized bees are not more dangerous than European bees, but their colonies are more defensive. Recent evidence suggests they are becoming less aggressive due to interbreeding and selective human intervention.
