VOICED : La OMS cambia el nombre de la viruela del mono a mpox

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the disease known as monkeypox will be renamed Mpox in all languages. This decision follows reports of racist and stigmatizing language associated with the original name. Both names will be used for a year before fully transitioning to Mpox. The disease was first identified in research monkeys in Denmark in 1958 but is more common in rodents. It was first reported in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Previously limited to certain African countries, Mpox cases have now been reported worldwide, with 81,000 cases and 55 deaths in 110 countries this year.
