The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is an Arabic-speaking nation in Southwestern Asia, known for its ultramodern cities, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The UAE is mostly desert with a subtropical arid climate. It has strategic importance due to its location near the Strait of Hormuz and possesses the world's seventh-largest oil reserves. The UAE was formed in 1971 and consists of seven emirates, each ruled by an absolute monarch. Abu Dhabi is the wealthiest emirate, while Dubai is a major economic hub. The population is around 9.2 million, with a majority of foreign nationals. The UAE follows Islamic law, and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a significant cultural landmark.
