Golf was initially played publicly on streets and was considered a male-dominated sport. It took nearly 400 years for women to be allowed to participate. The first women's golf tournament occurred on January 9, 1811, in Musselburgh, Scotland. In 1867, the Ladies Club of Saint Andrews, the first women's golf club, was established.
