In Colombia, a same-sex couple, Carlos Rivera and Gonzalo Ruiz, were legally recognized as married but without the official marriage document due to the lack of legal framework for same-sex marriage. Despite receiving all marital rights, their union is not termed as marriage. Activists supported them, highlighting the legislative challenges faced, as a 2013 bill for same-sex marriage was rejected. Since 2007, same-sex couples in Colombia have had equal social and inheritance rights as heterosexual couples, but they cannot adopt children.
