Peru is on track to break its record for cocaine seizures in a year, with 40,600 kilos seized by September 18, 2018, compared to the previous record of 50,057 kilos in 2017. The Interior Minister, Mauro Medina, highlighted the dismantling of 76 criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking and ongoing operations against narcotraffickers and remnants of the Sendero Luminoso guerrilla. These groups protect drug traffickers in the major coca cultivation area of El Brahem. A 2017 report noted Peru had 43,900 hectares of coca cultivation, ranking behind Colombia but ahead of Bolivia.
