Nearly 3,000 Portuguese firefighters were mobilized to prevent the resurgence of forest fires that resulted in at least 41 deaths in Portugal and 4 in Spain. Overnight rain and reduced wind intensity aided firefighting efforts. Portugal's Civil Protection reported that 6 of 7 missing persons were found safe, with 71 injured, 16 seriously. In central and northern Portugal, residents are working to restore their lives and agriculture. The fires, exacerbated by warm winds from Tropical Storm Ophelia, mark the second major fire event in four months.
