Although the additional revenue from the canal is not crucial for Panama's economy, the delay in completion has caused a shortfall in expected income. This shortfall, however, is not significant enough to impact the country's overall financial health. The delay was caused by a construction workers' strike and disputes over cost overruns by the international consortium managing the project.
