Wilma Mankiller

Wilma Mankiller was a prominent leader who dedicated her life to the Cherokee Nation and Indigenous rights. Born in Oklahoma, she moved to San Francisco due to the Indian Relocation Act. Inspired by the Alcatraz occupation, she returned to Oklahoma, becoming the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation. Her leadership saw increased revenues, membership, and infrastructure, including health centers and language programs. Her legacy continues to inspire those fighting for Indigenous rights.
