Cuban dissidents have accused the government of using intimidation tactics to prevent their participation in the upcoming elections to choose Raúl Castro's successor. Manuel Cuesta, leader of the Otro 18 platform, announced plans to present 171 candidates for municipal elections, a step towards potentially joining the parliament that will elect the new president in 2018. However, some candidates face legal challenges, with one sentenced to house arrest and another to prison. In the 2015 municipal elections, dissidents managed to present two candidates, both of whom were defeated.
