Charlie Chaplin visited Tokyo 80 years ago, arriving by boat and traveling by a government-supplied train. During his visit in the early 1930s, Japan was in political turmoil with factions seeking a militaristic stance. Chaplin experienced strange events, including threats and a hotel search. He was with the Prime Minister's son when news broke of the Prime Minister's assassination during the May 15th incident, a failed coup by the Blood Brothers aiming to restore authoritarian rule. Chaplin, popular in America, laughed off the news, reminding everyone of his English roots.
