Why Does Your Breath Stink in the Morning?

Morning breath is caused by bacteria that thrive in the mouth overnight due to reduced saliva production. These bacteria produce odor-causing compounds. While some bacteria protect against harmful invaders, they also contribute to cavities and gum disease. Saliva usually helps control bacteria by washing them away and contains antimicrobial agents like lactoferrin. At night, less saliva is produced, allowing bacteria to grow and produce odors similar to rotten eggs and other unpleasant smells.
