In the remote village of Urtopulak, a gas well fire burned for 1074 days. Various methods to extinguish it failed, leading to the decision to use an underground nuclear explosion. The explosion successfully sealed the well, ending the fire and requiring only the cementing of the former emergency well. This marked the end of the 1074-day ordeal.
