The 16th annual Tyler Rose Festival is celebrated with Queen Sally Kay and Mayor Claude Holley. The festival is inaugurated by Alan Shivers, featuring a parade led by Secretary of the Interior Douglas McKay. Over 100 floats and bands, including the Tyler Junior College Apache Bells, entertain 150,000 spectators. The festival showcases antique automobiles and pays tribute to the region's rose-growing industry, which supplies two-thirds of the 30 million rose bushes sold yearly. Roses have various uses, but their beauty is unmatched at the Tyler Festival, as is the charm of Queen Sally Kay.
