What is the Rastafarian Religion?

Rastafari is a young religion originating in Jamaica in the 1930s, centered around the belief in Haile Selassie as the second coming. It combines elements of Christianity with Afrocentric and pan-African movements. Rastafarians abstain from materialism and view Ethiopia as Zion. Marijuana is used sacramentally, but not required. The religion avoids denominations, but has three main groups: Twelve Tribes of Israel, Niyabinghi, and Bobo Ashanti. Music, especially reggae, plays a significant role, with Bob Marley as a key figure. Rastafari has a global presence, with communities worldwide.
