Gary Strobel, a plant pathologist from Montana State University, has spent 50 years exploring all continents to collect plant samples. His work has led to the discovery of fungi that produce Taxol, a billion-dollar anti-cancer drug, and new antibiotics. Supported by the National Science Foundation, Strobel and his team have also found that endophytes, microorganisms living within plants, can produce diesel-like fuels. By simulating ancient forest conditions in a paleobiosphere, they can create small amounts of fuel in just three weeks. Strobel aims to enhance this process to produce economically viable quantities of hydrocarbons from agricultural waste. These fungal products have potential uses in medicine, fuel, plastics, and green chemicals.
