Luis Inacio Lula de Silva was sworn in as Brazil's new president in a ceremony attended by thousands. The traditional transfer of the presidential sash was performed by a sanitation worker, as the outgoing president, Jarboe Zonaro, was absent, being in Florida. Lula's election victory in October was by a narrow margin, which some of Zonaro's supporters have not accepted.
