The World Health Organization reports that two of the three polio strains have been eradicated globally, with type 3 last seen in Nigeria in 2012 and type 2 eradicated in 2015. Only type 1 remains active, primarily in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Despite progress, challenges such as vaccine misinformation and insecurity hinder complete eradication. Specimens of eradicated strains are securely contained.
