Between January and September 2017, North Korea earned approximately $200 million by exporting coal, iron, steel, and other raw materials, circumventing international sanctions. A UN expert panel report reveals that North Korea evades oil sanctions through various channels, involving foreign entities and the international banking system. The imposition of economic sanctions in late 2016 and 2017 created lucrative markets for traffickers supplying oil to North Korea and transporting its raw material exports. The report also highlights military cooperation projects in Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, Syria, and Myanmar, particularly in the ballistic missile sector. In response, the UN Security Council intensified sanctions against Pyongyang to curb its military, ballistic, and nuclear programs.
