Petruccio and his servant Grumio arrive in Padua and visit Hortensio. Petruccio seeks a wealthy wife, undeterred by Catherine's reputation. Hortensio plans to disguise himself as a music teacher to win Bianca's love. Meanwhile, Grammio and Lucentio, also disguised, compete for Bianca's affection. Petruccio agrees to court Catherine if her dowry is sufficient. Tranio, posing as Lucentio, joins the rivalry for Bianca, and they all plan to celebrate together.
