Ukraine is committed to a peace process with pro-Russian separatists, as stated by President Petro Poroshenko. However, Ukraine is also preparing for potential conflict by rearming with advanced technology. A peace plan was signed on September 5 to end the conflict that has resulted in over 4,000 deaths since April. Despite this, recent elections in eastern Ukraine, recognized by Russia, have been criticized internationally and deemed a violation of the agreement by Kiev. The pro-Russian rebel leader Aleksandr Zaharchenko was inaugurated as president of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, leading to concerns that Kiev's retaliatory measures could end the fragile truce.
