In January 2020, members of a Panamanian sect were convicted for a massacre in the indigenous community of El Terrón. Seven members received 50-year sentences, while two others received 47 years each. The sect, known as the Church of the New Light of God, brutally attacked victims to 'exorcise demons.' A pregnant woman and her children were among the victims. The bodies were found in a mass grave. Despite the sect's secrecy, some victims escaped and alerted the police, leading to arrests.
