The American Presidential Election of 1872

The 22nd Presidential election in 1872 was notable for being the first where all states used a popular vote. Ulysses Grant, despite scandals in his administration, was renominated by the Republicans. Some Republicans formed the Liberal Republican Party, nominating Horace Greeley. The Democrats also backed Greeley. Third parties like the Prohibition and Equal Rights Party emerged, with Victoria Woodhull becoming the first female presidential nominee. Grant won reelection, but Greeley died before the Electoral College met, leading to a unique electoral situation.
