Nikola Tesla was hired by Thomas Edison in New York City, where he admired Edison. However, they disagreed on electricity types: Edison supported direct current (DC), while Tesla favored alternating current (AC). Their partnership turned into a rivalry when Tesla improved Edison's DC motor and generator, but Edison dismissed his offer of $50,000 as a joke. Tesla resigned and joined Westinghouse, Edison's competitor. The rivalry between Edison and Westinghouse over electricity efficiency ended with AC becoming the standard due to its ability to travel long distances and transfer to higher voltages.
