Hamlet 1.3 What's Happening

At Elsinore Castle, Polonius, a key advisor, and his children, Laertes and Ophelia, are introduced. Laertes is set to return to France and warns Ophelia about her relationship with Hamlet, suggesting that as a prince, Hamlet may not have the freedom to choose his spouse. Ophelia agrees but cautions Laertes to heed his own advice. Polonius enters, offering Laertes advice before his departure. Polonius also shares Laertes' concerns about Ophelia's romance with Hamlet, and Ophelia is compelled to obey her father's command to avoid Hamlet, despite her feelings.
