In the late 19th century, Thomas Edison held a monopoly over the electricity market with his direct current (DC) system, despite its inefficiencies over long distances. Nikola Tesla introduced alternating current (AC), which could transmit power over greater distances. This led to a fierce rivalry known as the War of the Currents. Edison launched a smear campaign against AC, associating it with danger, even funding the electric chair's development. Despite his efforts, AC prevailed and remains the dominant form of electricity supply today, cementing Tesla's legacy over Edison's.
