In colonial America, women's experiences varied by religion, social status, and location, but they shared a lack of rights and freedom. Marriage was crucial for women to improve their lives, as unmarried women faced economic hardships and social stigma. Married women were considered their husband's property under coverture, managing households and children without owning property or voting. Widows gained some rights, but many women were unaware due to limited education. Over time, society evolved, granting more equality and freedom to both genders.
