Human Rights Watch claims that Colombian generals and colonels were aware of and possibly ordered extrajudicial executions of civilians between 2002 and 2008, known as 'false positives.' These incidents involved the military presenting civilians as guerrillas killed in combat to inflate insurgent death counts and gain promotions. Current military leaders Juan Pablo Rodríguez and Jaime Lasprilla are implicated. Despite investigations into 3,000 cases, few officers have been convicted. President Juan Manuel Santos disputes these claims, stating no investigations target the accused officers.
