The former captain of the Costa Concordia, Francesco Cettino, was sentenced to 16 years and one month in prison by an Italian court for involuntary manslaughter of 32 people and abandoning the ship. Despite his conviction, he will not serve time immediately. Cettino admitted the disaster occurred due to his risky maneuver near an island, which led to the ship hitting reefs. The trial, which began in July 2013, involved around 400 witnesses. Cettino's decision to leave the ship before passengers sparked public outrage in Italy, labeling him a coward.
